As the year begins to draw to a close, there is every chance that your mind is taking you on a trip back through the past twelve months, assessing what you have achieved and whether you have moved in the right direction. Alongside this, you are probably beginning to get some initial ideas about what you want to accomplish next year, and your New Year’s resolutions may be beginning to form in your mind.
Of course, at the same time as all this is going on, you are almost undoubtedly chasing around like a headless chicken, trying to get everything organized for the festive season. There are cards to send and presents to buy and visits with loved ones to arrange. The list of things to do is endless and so next year’s plans get put on hold temporarily.
What about when all the fuss and furor has died down though? It’s a day or two after Christmas, you’re still on your vacation time, you’re already saturated with Christmas movies and you’re beginning to feel a bit restless and need something to occupy your mind. Why not use some of this time, when you are feeling more relaxed but also have one eye firmly fixed on the year to come, to start tidying up and updating your resume and putting together your plans for the coming year? You don’t have to make it a chore or spend endless hours on it, but you can use some of this time constructively to make a start.
If you’re looking to change direction altogether but are not quite sure which way to jump, a break away from the hustle and bustle of your usual work routine can also be a great opportunity to spend some time visualizing how you want your future to look. Use some of your down time to let yourself float off into your imagination and think about what you really want to be doing, and then start to make some plans to move yourself closer to your goals.
There are, actually, some big advantages to getting moving even before the start of the Christmas holidays, and I will talk about a couple of these in tomorrow’s post, but even if you don’t feel inclined to exert yourself too much right at the moment, you can still get that engine all revved up and ready to go in the meantime.
