I have mentioned before that internships and other types of temporary positions can be a great way to get your foot in the door for more permanent opportunities, and Christmas jobs are no exception. Because the workloads and stresses are often greater during this extremely busy period, it is in fact an ideal time to really show what you are made of and to create the very best impression.
As in all cases, showing your reliability and dependability is essential and that, of course, means showing up for work on time and providing excellent service to your employer at all times. As he and your colleagues and co-workers are likely to be run ragged at this time of year, however, you can make yourself stand out by going one step further and volunteering to learn more and do more. Willingness and enthusiasm count for a lot when you are looking to create the right impression, so look for opportunities to demonstrate yours.
Of course, the very fact that everything is so frantic at Christmas may mean that trying to catch your boss’s eye and get yourself noticed could be more difficult than at other times, so it is important that you let him know that you are interested in being kept on once the festive season comes to an end. Remember, he is not a mind reader and he may not know of your interest so it is up to you to tell him. If he proves particularly difficult to pin down, then make a point of showing up at the company’s HR department in person if possible, or at the very least contact them by telephone. Let them know that you are currently employed on a temporary basis and express your interest in staying on. Even if they do not have any immediate permanent vacancies, the fact that your work is already known to the organization will stand you in good stead for the future.
