The ten-yearly US census might not normally be much of a cause for celebration, but for some of those who are currently without employment and a source of income, the 2010 event might just offer a small ray of sunshine.
The census is aimed at finding out how many people live in the country, who they are and where they live. Federal government uses the results to allocate funds, and the information is also used by a variety of other groups to form the basis of their research.
Newspaper reports from all over the country are currently showing that testing sites are being set up to identify suitable candidates for jobs with the Census Bureau. With temporary and part-time positions available for office workers and census takers, those who are successful are likely to secure between four and eight weeks’ work, much of which involves evening and weekend work. Pay seems to vary from county to county, with some, for example, quoting between around $13 and $17 per hour and others just over $11 to $13 per hour plus reimbursement for mileage. In all cases, the successful applicants will receive paid training. Candidates must be over 18 years of age and have to pass a 28 item multiple choice test to evaluate their reading, numerical and clerical abilities. To be considered for selection, their test score must be 70% or higher and they also have to pass a background check.
Literally hundreds of thousands of census takers are needed around the country and one of the great advantages for those who are successful is that the work gives them the opportunity to provide an important service to their local communities.
