Although some things are still best done on a full-sized computer screen, having a cell phone with Internet access lets you send, share and learn on the go, and it stops you from being tempted to use your work computer for your job search.

E-mail

1. Being able to check your e-mail when you are at work during the day or when you are out and about is just one of the huge advantages of a cell phone with Internet access.  In most cases you can set an alert to let you know each time a message appears in your inbox but, if you receive lots of notifications of job openings by e-mail, then you may wish to turn this off and just keep checking at regular intervals, otherwise it could become irritating.

Files

2. You never know when you might run into a job opportunity and having the capability to respond immediately by winging off a copy of your digital resume, a scanned copy of your qualifications or certificates or other documents will make you look both enthusiastic and professional.  You can send via MMS, Bluetooth or e-mail or, if both you and your contact have an iPhone with the Bump application installed, then you simply need to select your file and bump hands to transfer it.

3. Save your company research into files that you can access anytime and anywhere and you can give your memory a quick refresh right before an interview.

4. Any kind of learning on the go is easy if you download e-books or other documents into files on your cell phone.  This is a great time-saver as it means that you can use what might otherwise be wasted time (such as when you are using public transport) more constructively.

Web Browser

5. Whether you want to do a last minute check of a company website before a meeting or interview, check out the online job listings or keep your personal branding information on the social networking sites and your blog up to date, nothing could be easier.

6. Use the Internet to find maps and directions to your interviews, or simply to check out the location of a target company

GPS

7. If your cell phone has satellite navigation, you can use this to find your way to meetings and interviews.  Do be sure to check where you are going beforehand though, so that you can factor in plenty of time for the journey.

In tomorrow’s final part of this mini-series on how to get the most out of your cell phone when you are job searching, I will take a look at some of the relevant applications which are available for download to the iPhone.
