In years gone by, the recruitment agency was one of the most popular resources used to find employment.  Of course, nowadays, many such agencies either operate solely online or have an online presence, but either way, if you choose to include them as one of your job search resources, here are a few tips which are worth bearing in mind.

Be selective

While many agencies cater to a wide range of fields, industries and occupations, others are more specific and only deal, for example, in medical jobs or the engineering industry.  If they are of the more specialized variety, remember that:

1.   It probably is not worthwhile registering if their focus does not match your career field, and

2.   A specialized agency will have a better understanding of your requirements, your knowledge, skills and qualifications, salary and benefit ranges within your area and so on.  In short, they are likely to be able to make a better match.

In addition, remember to take into consideration the location that you wish to work in.  Some agencies cater more for local opportunities, while others focus on the national or international job market.

Get recommendations

As in any business, some agencies have better reputations and achieve greater results than others.  If you know people who have used particular agencies, ask them for some feedback.  Did they waste your contact’s time by sending him for interviews for positions which were entirely unsuitable, or did they work well to establish a good match?

Be prepared

If you are unclear about your own requirements when you approach a recruitment agency, what chance do they stand of making a good match on your behalf?  Know what you want and what you have to offer in return.  Be sure that you provide an up-to-date resume which focuses on your skills, experience and achievements and be prepared to offer a ball-park figure in terms of your salary expectations.

Ask questions

Just as you would ask questions at an interview with a hiring company, be sure to find out as much as you can about vacant positions from the agency.  If possible, get them to provide you with a job description for the position so that you can really study it.

Understand the payment process

The fees which are payable to a recruitment agency for a successful hire are paid by the hiring company, not the candidate.  Steer clear of any company which asks you to pay for the opportunity to work.

It is also worth bearing in mind that, although the Internet may have convenience on its side, often it can be helpful to build up a relationship and a rapport with the staff of a local recruitment agency.  Having the opportunity to discuss your requirements in a face-to-face setting can go a long way to ensuring a better match.
